"Kvetch" tracks the true story of this talented, tormented--and ultimately triumphant transcontinental sojourner--who through sheer guts escapes the clutches of her sadistic mother and to her delight discovers a life of her own in sunny Southern California. KVETCH ONE BITCH OF A LIFEA Memoir of Music Survival eBook Greta Beigel

This book is almost a stream of consciousness, sometimes jumping from one problem or crisis to another - in the way that the author's life must have done. Beigel gives a unique view of a world very different from most of her American readers' - she grew up in a Jewish community, in South Africa. She describes a childhood (and adulthood) filled with abuse and angst and opportunity, so that the book is sometimes painfully difficult to relate to and, yet, reveals how the human spirit can endure.I think that most people will feel their world expanded a little after reading this autobiography.

KVETCH ONE BITCH OF A LIFEA Memoir of Music Survival eBook Greta Beigel Reviews

A book that earns its title. As a piano prodigy in South Africa, Beigel was horrifyingly exploited and abused. It's a sort of triumph that she recounts her life with something approaching off-handed, if sometimes sardonic, humor.
A story so well written that I felt as if I were actually experiencing the life of the author. I wanted to slap her Mother and pummel her brother for their cruelty. I kept waiting for Greta to find her strength to stand up for her dignity and was relieved when she finally did. Beautiful use of language, I look forward to more from this talented author.
A haunting story of an amazing talent that was silenced too soon by abuse and mental illness gone untreated. Also a story of rebirth where other talents were discovered and developed. Especially appreciated was the insight into the Jewish culture around death and dying, perhaps centuries old tranditions, and how necessary they are to the healing process for the author.
It was fascinating to learn about Jewish culture and apartheid South Africa, but what I found most compelling was learning about resilience, fortitude, and forgiveness. But don't be confused; this story is not about Jewish culture or South Africa, but about humanity -- at the core we're all the same. It's what we do with what we've been dealt what makes the difference.
The story of Greta Beigel's life as a young piano prodigy in apartheid Johannesburg in the '60s is heartbreaking. That she survived the destructiveness of her disturbed and narcissistic mother is a tribute to her strength and innate optimism.

Beigel distills the good from her painful past through her passion for music, the love and approval of her father, old friendships, and the special Jewish rituals (particularly the gastronomic ones). Yet a search for “home" still lingers as she travels the globe looking for that place that will nourish her soul.

Beigel has a unique viewpoint, engaging style and much to say of universal value. Honest even poignant, this memoir is not filled with self-pity, but rather resonates with compelling self-awareness.
This is a chronicle of a rich and richly-observed life full of personal struggle that makes the reader wonder how Beigel could have lived through it all and managed to survive, It's not all dark, however. There are lots of humorous moments, and the book is full of deft character portraits, keen social and political observations, wit, an amazing objectivity, and not a single false (or "literary") note. It's a masterly achievement..
Review of Kvetch A Bitch of a Life by Greta Beigel

This is a very gripping autobiography of an extremely talented woman who was faced with more than her share of the personal trials and tragedies of which most of us suffer one or two. While she is unable to Rocky-like, completely overcome the obstacles life threw at her, this story is still in turns heartwarming and horrifying, but always relatable. This book is well worth reading despite the somewhat weak ending.
